The sun is shining and the birds are chirping, so naturally my mind is preoccupied with the possibilities of Spring. If you're feeling the same, here are a few pictures I took at beautiful Filoli last year. They are getting me really excited for the months to come. Enjoy!
This holiday season I am looking forward to taking a break from work and spending more time with friends and family doing the things I love: sitting by the fire, cooking and sharing meals, and maybe going on an adventure or two.
Haven will be back in 2014 with bigger and better things, but for now here is a peek at my own home for the holidays.
I'm a sucker for the changing seasons and Fall is no exception. There may be a brief moment of hesitation right at the start, a pang of longing for warm days, beaches, homegrown tomatoes and barbecues every night. But those feelings are quickly replaced with the joys of crisp air alight with the cozy scent of woodsmoke, crunching leaves underfoot and dazzling colors in the trees. Throw in big warm sweaters and a pot roast and I'm like, 'bikini who?'
Not to mention all of the new decorating options! It's always nice to change things up a little at home. Pumpkins, anyone?
A variety of mixed up colors, shapes and sizes of pumpkins makes a dynamic seasonal display for the front porch...
... while stacked white pumpkins in an urn create a simple and charming centerpiece indoors.
One last burst of color before the plants in my garden go dormant!
As I write this I can't believe it's been a little over a year since my last post. I definitely get an F in blogging... but that's ok with me. So much has happened since last summer - moving into a new home, adopting a third puppy, travel, and lots of exciting projects and business adventures. It's been busy and at times challenging, but I've had the joy of achieving some big goals and seeing some of my creative dreams come true.
Now that I feel like I've got (some of) my stuff together, I'll be updating the website with projects that I've completed this past year. Please visit my Interiors Gallery to see pics of the (almost!) finished Serene Master Suite. I've also added 3 new photo albums to the Landscape Gallery: California Spanish, Contemporary Hacienda, and Classic Cape Cod.
My main focus is on clients and ongoing projects so blogging isn't going to be frequent, but it will happen more than once a year! Stay tuned as I continue to update the website with more project photos, inspiring design topics, & the progress I'm making on my own home.
I also have to give a huge thank you... it's been a big year for Haven. I'm so grateful to have the support of my friends, family, and loyal clients (old and new). You all challenge me, inspire me, and help me grow.
Nothing like a bouquet of peonies on your nightstand to brighten up your day!
Mine are pale pink with a ruffled cream center contrasted by a blue glass mason jar. LOVE.
I thought it would be neat to post a few before and after pics of a backyard project we finished last week. The homeowner wanted something low maintenance, clean, and simple but that reflected a little bit of a cottage garden inspiration.
You can't tell because they're not blooming yet, but there is a bunch of lavender & carpet rose that we planted as a border. I can't wait to go back in the summer and see everything in all of its blooming glory...
Spring is officially here and that means that I can allow myself to launch full force into garden planning for the coming months. We might be moving in a bigger place with a bigger yard, which will be an exciting project in and of itself. But, whether we do or not, there are several things I want to try in my garden this year.
First off, I'm making one of these succulent "fountains". When I saw this for the first time (thank you, Pinterest) I was obsessed. I freaking LOVE this.
Second, I'm going to plant some wisteria because... well, why not?! It's gorgeous, fragrant, romantic, dreamy...
Last year I set up an outdoor eating area with string lights which I was pretty pleased with, but this year I'm going to really try to perfect it, like these:
We grow veggies every year, but if we get a bigger space my goal is to build some raised beds OR get some of these cool oversized galvanized contaners! They don't rot, and the have a built in spiggot to ensure good drainage.
I've also always wanted a cool fire pit to sit around, like this guy:
Well... more like this:
Or maybe a chiminea...
Ok, I know that's a lot of goals... but I'm a project lover. I'll keep you posted on my progress if I make any. In the meantime, what are your plans for your garden this spring?
Looks like the San Mateo Antiques Market has been cancelled for the forseeable future... what a bummer! I heard through the grapevine that the CSM location didn't work out and they are trying to find a new venue. Keep your fingers crossed!
A New Place to Shop!
A couple of weeks ago I had the awesome opportunity to help my friend Stacy (owner of the fabulous store, Dream) set up and sell at the brand new College of San Mateo Antiques & Collectibles Market. By my calculations the event had to have at least 200 if not 300 vendors and a great turn out of shoppers. There was plenty of food, music, and tons of cool stuff.
It was a great treat to spend an entire day hanging out with my best friend; helping promote our businesses was just the icing on the cake. We caught up with friends, made new contacts, sold stuff, and smelled so much kettle corn that I don’t think I’ll ever be able to eat it again.
The new market was so successful that I can’t wait for the next one. Flea markets are such an amazing source for everyone; you can find the perfect chair for your client’s living room, a cool piece of jewelry for your friend’s b-day, or that obscure record/book/cooking utensil/belt buckle you’ve been searching high and low for. Even if you don’t score an amazing find, flea markets are a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon ambling along people and stuff watching. To have one in our own backyard is like a dream come true!
I've included some pics of Stacy's lovely booth and of the market itself. It’s going to be held the third Sunday of every month from 9am-5pm but don’t dawdle; many vendors start packing up early if the crowd thins. You can find out more about the College of San Mateo Antiques Market on their website: www.sanmateoantiques.com.
See you there next time!
Vintage Indian Suitcases, found object art, and antique greek and turkish olive jars at Dream's booth. And yes that's right, she does accept credit cards!
Garden Goodies @ Dream
Cement faces & hot pink 'Dream Dust' @ Dream
We had a really cool selection of chairs to choose from!
More handmade goodies from Stacy... 100% recycled purses made from salvaged fabrics, buttons, and vintage army bags
There was neat stuff all around... a definite must see!
A Rose, by any other name, would smell as sweet...
What's with the new website title? I've decided to get a real business name! Saying my own name over and over again has made it sound less than appealing to my ears, and I want a business name that truly reflects what I do and what's important to me.
The word 'Haven' is defined as "a place of safety or sanctuary; shelter" and is also described as a place of "refuge". In the context of one's home, 'Haven' then means a place for you to retreat from the day's troubles and relax... a place where you leave the outside world behind to renew and find peace . The same goes for a garden- what better way to design a lovely garden than as someone's sanctuary?!
I may also have a personal connection to the word 'Haven', as I'm considered a homebody and at times, even, a recluse (but not in a weird way). For me my home is my haven. It's my safety zone, the place where I can find sanctuary and balance from the stresses of life. But a 'haven' isn't solitary... friends have mentioned feeling welcomed and comforted in my home, meaning that a 'haven' can be sanctuary for one's friends and family too.
All that said, 'Haven' it is! I'm going to give it a shot and I have a feeling the name's going to stick. Please be patient with me as I transition to more aptly titled web address, e-mail, etc.
Here a are few lovely looking havens... what's yours???
